19-year-old dies in deadly crash on I-580 in Oakland – CBS San Francisco

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – California Highway Patrol officers in Oakland are investigating a fatal accident on I-580 on Saturday morning that resulted in the death of a young man, according to authorities.

At around 6:45 a.m. on Saturday morning, Oakland CHP officials responded to a call reporting an injury collision involving a collision of two vehicles with an ambulance responding on I-580 west east of 14th Street.

Arriving police officers found a Toyota Scion with serious accident damage and found that the driver of the vehicle – a 19-year-old man – had sustained fatal injuries. CHP’s preliminary investigation found that the Scion’s driver had exceeded the advertised speed limit on I-580 heading west when it hit the rear of a Ford Escape.

The Scion twisted toward its right shoulder, where it eventually hit the criss-crossing cement pillar, CHP said. There were no other injuries in the accident, the authorities said. CHP said late Saturday morning it was not known whether alcohol and / or drugs played a role in the crash.

As a result of the collision and the subsequent investigation, all lanes of the I-580 in a westerly direction remained closed until around 7:10 a.m.

The victim’s identity is currently not disclosed until next of kin are notified, CHP said. Anyone with information about the collision is encouraged to contact the Oakland CHP Office at 510-457-2875.
