Oakland Faculties Information: First OUSD Meals Lab Problem Winners Introduced

Oakland – The first OUSD Food Lab Challenge on Tuesday was a resounding success with seven teams made up of summer student interns in the Central Kitchen, Education Center and Instructional Farm creating amazing new meals for a jury and hoping to be crowned winners become chefs.

The task was to create a meal that could easily be mass-produced on a daily basis in the central kitchen for many, if not all, students across the district. The teams developed meals that ranged from a Garden Fresh Pho noodle dish and tortilla salad bowl to Green Leaf Pupusa and Ryna’s stuffed peppers. They also made desserts that included fruit cups and kale smoothies.

The winning team created what they called Jahita Rice, which was inspired by the African heritage of Destiny Ndubuisi, along with the peach cobbler, who was inspired by a recipe in Amani Griffin’s family. Griffin just graduated from McClymonds High School and Ndubuisi is a senior at Skyline High School.

The judges said almost all meals could be included on the Central Kitchen menu, and those that couldn’t were more for logistical reasons. Some interns were also offered jobs and internships in the kitchen and in a restaurant, represented by one of the jurors.
