Oakland Information: April 21, 2021 | Life

Our April 11th service began with our call to worship, “In the Sweet By and By.” Brothers. Terry Wilburn sang “The Midnight Cry”. Special music was provided by the Mathis family, “Wouldn’t it have been” and “This world is not my home”. Brothers. Don’s sermon “A Torn Curtain and a Torn Centurion” is from Mark 15.

And Jesus cried out in a loud voice and breathed in his last breath. Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion standing across from him saw him cry so and take his last breath, he said, “Verily, this man was the Son of God!” Mark 15: 37-39.

“And Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, and so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3: 14-15.

Numbers 21 recorded that the Israelites turned against God and Moses, angry over the food and no water. So God sent fiery snakes to bite people, and many died. Then they cried out to Moses to pray that God would take away the serpents. According to God’s direction, Moses made a fiery serpent out of bronze and placed it on a pole. Anyone who was bitten just had to look at the bronze snake and they would not die.

Jesus declared to Nicodemus that he was born again. In that scripture he was referring to passage number 21.

“And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3: 14-15.

It was necessary for Jesus to be lifted up on the cross so that man could give man a way back to God.

His last breath and the torn curtain.

When Jesus took his last breath at the same moment, the veil of the temple was torn. The priest was in the holy place and offered the evening sacrifice. As he peered into the Inner Sanctuary, he must have been terrified. It was completely torn from top to bottom and there was no one else around. The curtain was not a thin curtain, but a heavy curtain. It has not been borne by time or use. What should that mean? The curtain was no longer necessary. It had been a symbol of man’s sin that had built a wall between man and God. The torn curtain was the result of the perfect sacrifice that tore down the wall and bridged the distance between us and God.

His last breath and the torn centurion.

The watch that caused the crack. The centurion was torn between rejecting and accepting. He watched Jesus take his last breath. The centurion was a tough, experienced soldier who commanded 100 men. This was not his first crucifixion. He had watched Jesus react to the ridiculousness. He heard the words Jesus spoke to God and to the thieves on either side of him. He saw the way Jesus took his last breath.

The centurion’s answer to everything he witnessed:

“Verily, this man was the Son of God.”
