Oakland Metropolis Council unanimously approves Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan’s proposal to help litigation in opposition to Ghost Weapons

Oakland, California – Today, Oakland City Council unanimously voted in favor of Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan’s resolution in support of San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin’s lawsuit against “ghost weapon” manufacturers. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to prohibit companies from shipping their products in California. Vice Mayor Kaplan applauds Attorney General Rob Bonta, who announced earlier last week that he would join the lawsuit to tackle this growing crisis at the source.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and particularly in recent months, Oakland has seen an upward trend in gun violence. Illegal arms dealers and users are taken care of by the simple procurement and assembly of ghost weapons and their lack of traceability. This trend has impacted not just Oakland but the Bay Area and beyond.

Kaplan states, β€œHumans bring death to our communities and make profits while circumventing basic gun safety laws. I am delighted that my colleagues have approved my proposal, and now the City of Oakland is publicly supporting this lawsuit to bring these “ghost rifle” manufacturers to justice. ”

Vice Mayor Kaplan has urged Nancy O’Malley, District Attorney for Alameda County, to join the lawsuit. β€œI urge you to join cities like our neighbors in San Francisco and the city of Los Angeles that have filed lawsuits against manufacturers of ghost guns. The entire system of gun safety laws and regulations is being undermined by ghost weapon manufacturers who benefit from the violence and damage in our community. So I beg that Alameda County join the San Francisco lawsuit against manufacturers and retailers of ghost weapons. “

Kaplan continues to advocate that every possible jurisdiction joins efforts to take a strong stand against the ghost weapon manufacturers and dealers who ravage our communities and are used to circumvent basic gun laws. Community members who wish to join this important call to Alameda County to help in this important effort to protect our communities from deadly ghost weapons are asked to join the following petition:

Background on Rebecca Kaplan’s fight against illegal weapons and gun violence:

Vice Mayor Kaplan has continuously advocated the control and regulation of ghost weapons and the prioritization of the end of armed violence. On April 20, 2021, it successfully passed a resolution calling on state lawmakers to enact regulations against ghost weapons. In December 2020, the Council unanimously passed a Kaplan-tabled resolution making gun violence a top priority for law enforcement. Kaplan penned and passed law banning the release of weapons in unattended vehicles – a dangerous act that often resulted in guns being stolen and used in killings. On April 12, 2021, it successfully raised funds to expand ShotSpotter to currently uncovered areas of East Oakland, support Operation Armistice, and fund gun tracking to identify and close sources of illegal weapons (Dec. – budget table).
