OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A fast moving car got out of control and slammed into a KPIX 5 news van in downtown Oakland on Saturday night. Fortunately, the news crew escaped serious injury.

Oakland police said a driver crashed into multiple vehicles, including the news van, at around 8:30 p.m. before finally resting after leaving a parked SUV.

The driver fled, but officers arrested the suspect one block from the scene of the accident near 14th and Broadway.

Police do not believe the crash is related to nearby protests.

KPIX 5 reporter Da Lin said he was sitting in the van preparing his report on these protests for the 11pm news bulletin. He saw the car arrive at the van at high speed before the vehicle slammed against the front end of his parked vehicle.

At the time of the crash, there was a large police presence in downtown Oakland as the protests ended on May 1. Two protesters were arrested for attacking police officers, but the protest was largely peaceful with no reports of widespread vandalism.
